Hello, I wasnt sure if there was a good place to post this type of message, but I was looking to meet with someone who would consider themselves to be a Hollingsworth Family Historian. I visit several area cemeteries regularly coupled with my research at the library. Perhaps some of the information I have found may be beneficial for them. I am interested in learning more myself. If you know of anyone, or could direct me on where to post this message, please share your thoughts. Thanks, |

Hello, I wanted to share with you that the Huntsville Madison County Public Library has the Gurley Herald Newspaper on microfiche. They keep it locked in a file room on the third floor in the archives/heritage room. When loaded into the viewers, readers can print directly from these older newspapers for just 20 cents per sheet. It is possible that some dates might have gotten lost or destroyed, but overall, they should have nearly every paper. Up there at the library Heritage room are tons and tons of family papers, archives, books, and such all relating directly to the Gurley area. My favorite is the book about the Keel and Whitaker families. Another good source of information is in the cemetery books. Anyway, I just thought Id pass this along in case theres anyone whod like to know. Chase, AL |

Hello! What a wonderful sight you have! I don't know exactly how I got here BUT I'm sure glad I did! I was looking up the Mason family from Sussex, VA who moved to Old Spring Hill, Al. My GGGrandmother was Wilmot Jane Mason, her Mom Elizabeth Blunt Mason, buried @ Old Spring Hill. Jane married John Harrell and moved to Texas. I now live on part of the old Harrell Plantation, San Jacinto County, TX., which I inherited from my folks, the Hopkins. Jane's father, Dr. John Raines Mason of VA., had several sons and I'm guessing your Mr. Johnson is one of the son's grandsons. I'd love to get in touch with him. I am Arnette Hopkins Daugherty, 1-936-xxx-xxxx. Thank you so much. I Will add you to my favorites so I can read all your wonderful stories and history. |

I was just looking at Gurleys on the web when I came across
your web site. One of the pictures of your ancestors in
Gurley, Alabama had the middle name of Williams (with an s
on the end). My Gurley line came from Massachusetts through Connecticut to Louisiana to Washington, D.C. My G-Grandfather's name was Revere Williams Gurley as is my brother's name. My G=Grandfather was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He had a number of brothers and sisters who moved to Mississippi when their parents died. Do you know anything of these people? They tend to disappear after the 1860 census in which they are listed by initials. I was intrigued because of the middle name of Williams. It seems a little unusual. My ancestors were from a small town in Connecticut named Gurley. I just like the sound of the similarities. Sincerely, |

Just a quick note to let you (and Lou Sams--if they're still active in your
group?)
know how delighted I was to find the Ladies Home
Journal recipe for Doughnuts on your website!!
My mother used to recite this recipe as she made doughnuts when I was a girl.
She's passed away now and I'm 60, but during a snow day this week--I wanted to
make the Doughnuts. Though I didn't find the recipe until after I'd made a
mediocre (in my judgment) substitute, I
plan to follow the poetic recipe next time.
Thank you for including the article and recipes from the Reion Allison Notebook
Cookbook on your website. :-)

The managing editor wants to print a feature article about The Lost Gold of Keel Mountain, complete with photos, in an upcoming edition. I have some old photos I will send. I have seen the magazine and it is a well done publication. Also, I told them I would probably be in Gurley early September and would take some photos of Keel Mountain and send them along as well. They will let me know when this particular edition of the magazine would come out so I can advise you and the folks of Gurley. I would like to make sure Gurley gets a little publicity as well. |

I spoke with Senator Barron's assistant, Matt Smith, this morning, and Senator Barron will not be attending the meeting on Monday at
6:00 P.M. at the Library. This is an organizational meeting to line up support for Senator Barron in our area. Being present at this meeting will let the Senator know that we appreciate everything he has done for us in the past, and we are willing to work to secure him the opportunity to continue that help for the next 4 years. Senator Barron, according to Matt Smith, will be in Gurley on two occasions in September, but at this time people are needed to show their support for his campaign.

I was recently in your town performing a cultural resources survey for the
University of Alabama. I am unable to find any information on the Sublett Mill
that was formally known as the Peevey Mill in 1897. This mill was located on
the Flint River off Little Cove Road. I am also seeking information on the
Deposit Road, and the old Huntsville Road. Any leads would be appreciated.
Thank you so much. Cultural Resources Assistant Senior

I'm connecting with some other branches of our family trying to piece together
some of the history and connections. One bit of history is that
Keel Mountain was named for a Keel one generation off my branch of the family,
one Jesse Keel who is said to be buried on the mountain. Do you know if there is a cemetery on Keel Mountain dating back to the mid-1850s where I could look for his gravesite, or who I might ask in the area to find out?
